Psalmistry “Armchair Rebellion”

Big Beats from a 5 piece Breakbeat/Thrash/Techno/Hip-Hop crew from Bristol, UK. Some of the finest, most innovative Dance music I have heard in quite a long time, and an essential part of The Dance Chapel, as well as live sets. My favorite track off the album is “Drowning” which has fantastic synth sounds, fabulous programming, and an ocean of sound that makes you feel like you are drowning in it! Lucy Britten's vocals are passionate, and it seems as if she should have been singing with the Psalmistry crew all along because she's right at home. Edi Johnston’s vocals come in sounding almost like a spoken Rap kind of thing, with lots of effects on his voice, including distortion, and other cool stuff! It makes his vocals very Hardcore and Lucy's also have effects on them. There is an Echo feeling that I really like present throughout the song, and the music bed is to die for!

My second fave is “Didgereborn” because I am a Techno fan and this song is very good, hard, Techno. It uses the Australian musical instrument the Didjeroo to start the song and then the fantastic music bed starts building! It is filled with rich, hard, sonic textures. Did I mention the vocals? They don't say anything but are very nice, and in their sampled, ad libbing way, they sound tribal, and they fit the extravagant, foreign, explorative mood of the song. The vocals keep the pace and feel of the song, and add just what they need to making it a perfect Jam! It's also one of the songs people hear, and end up saying it's a matter of life and death to get the album.

“Something About Your Love” was featured on Eclectica 3 and was the US radio single. It is a favorite with listeners as well and has a very fast and furious feel, until the vocals hit and then you hear the beautiful keyboards. The song is a beautiful Composition of hard and soft, and the vocals are very cool talking about God's love giving you joy, and needing it. The vocal sample was provided courtesy of Scott Blackwell, and you know the pioneer of Christian Dance Music is everywhere when his work starts popping up on albums from Bristol!

“Bring Out the Beats” is a very hard Electronica Rap tune, and would fit nicely in some Industrial sets, yet has many nice Breakbeats, and is Hip-Hop flavored. “By Your Side” has some fantastic Vocals and an incredible Gospel message: “Lord be my guide, draw me closer to your side. By The Grace of God I find, I can't run and I can't hide from my Father's Love, Oh Jesus you are right there by my side.” It even has a sampled Preacher to kick off the beginning of the song.

“Jesus Armchair” inspires the albums title, and is one of the softest songs musically, while having the hardest hitting lyrical message: “Just relax now accepts the theories, settles back now he takes it easy, no need for thoughts he's still spoon fed, he's got his Jesus Armchair.” It talks about someone who has faith without works, and never fully dives into a relationship with Jesus but just stays in their comfort zone. Basically someone who stays on spiritual milk but never gets to the meat, just like the Bible discusses. Musically the song is very ballad like and starts out with an acoustical feel, and the vocals, and the pretty keyboards and electronics creep in as the song goes. The song is very pretty, and very haunting when the lyrics and the music join together. A very challenging song that makes you check where you're at.

There are many more wonderful songs on this album, and each is a favorite of mine in it's own way. Some songs are vocally driven, some are musically driven, some are Progressive House, some are Punk, some are Techno, Breakbeats, and Bigbeats. It is very good, and you are really missing out if you don't have it. It's Essential! It has The Dance Chapel Stamp of Approval, and can be purchased in the US through N-Soul Records
